Soma means body in Greek. We take a “bottom up” approach to mental health: we target the body’s autonomic nervous system with practices to calm the amygdala (the stress center of the brain) first. By inducing physiologic relaxation and a perceived sense of safety first through a variety of techniques, the mind is then ready and open for healing. If the body is tense and tight, the mind reflects that and will remain closed.

You’ll receive extensive breath training for autonomic regulation. You’ll not only learn these practices to share with others, but you’ll experience the benefits of them yourself. We focus on trauma-senstive breath practices that are most supportive for self-regulation. Breathwork is known as pranayama: prana means energy and yama means restraint or control. By learning how to control the breath, one learns how to regulate their energy. If energy sounds “woo-woo” have you ever noticed or said outloud “my energy is low today”? That is your life force, and specific ancient breath practices can boost and revitalize your state. Conversely, if a person is experiencing anxiety or panic, there are breath techniques to calm the nervous system into a state of ease. There is power in the breath!

Body, breath and then…. yoga nidra which is known as “yogic sleep” or, “sleep with trace awareness.” Some people describe it as the liminal space between wake and sleep, but yoga nidra is far deeper than that. The liminal, hypnogogic state reveals alpha brain waves…and the yoga nidra state reveals theta and delta brain waves, the most restorative type of sleep you get. While training the body to enter this state with trace awareness of consciousness, one is able to create new healthy habits and patterns, set intentions into the subconscious mind (which is fertile, open and receptive like a garden) and receive nourishing rest….something we all deserve! Here, in the yoga nidra state deep physiological and psychological healing can occur… and the most beautiful part of the experience is that it feels effortless and natural. It is accessible to everyone!
